David Russell, Verizon’s regional vice president of external affairs, on Monday received the Legacy of Men Award from a Forth Worth-area nonprofit organization for his work in the area of domestic violence prevention.

SafeHaven of Tarrant County presented Russell with the award at the 3rd annual Legacy of Men Breakfast in downtown Fort Worth, Texas.

SafeHaven stated that it selected Russell because of his activism and advocacy for victims of domestic violence, specifically citing his work to secure $300,000 in grants from the Verizon Foundation to fund agencies that work to end domestic violence.

SafeHaven also noted Russell’s work to raise awareness of Telling Amy’s Story, a powerful documentary produced by Penn State Public Broadcasting that chronicles the life of Amy Homan McGee, a young mother of two who was shot and killed by her husband. The documentary was funded by the Verizon Foundation.

Previous Legacy of Men Award winners are Dallas Cowboy and SCORE Foundation founder Jason Witten and Mike Stone, the former president of the Texas Rangers.

SafeHaven of Tarrant County is a nonprofit organization that focuses on ending family violence through safety, support, prevention and social change. SafeHaven has two emergency shelters that accommodate a total of 174 women and children.
