California State Assembly Honors Verizon For Domestic Violence Prevention Efforts
The California State Assembly honored Verizon with a resolution for its commitment to eradicating domestic violence. Domestic violence prevention and victim empowerment is one of the Verizon Foundation's core initiatives.
Since 2005, the foundation has invested $5.3 million in domestic violence prevention and intervention initiatives in California. Assembly Member Fiona Ma, who authored the award, cited Verizon for "funding innovative initiatives that empower victims to make changes in their lives and in the lives of their loved ones."
"Verizon demonstrates the kind of vision and commitment we need from the business community," said Ma. "The company's support and dedication on this issue have helped thousands of individuals break the cycle of violence."
In 2008, Verizon employees who work in the state donated $40,000 worth of household goods to 23 domestic violence shelters through the company's Shower for the Shelter program. The Verizon Wireless HopeLineTM phone recycling program distributed $1.2 million in phones, free air time and cash to domestic violence prevention agencies throughout California.
The award was presented at a state Legislative Day sponsored by the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence. "We are very honored to be recognized by Assembly Member Ma, a tireless leader in the efforts against domestic violence," said Elva Lima, Verizon vice president - strategic programs. "Verizon is committed to using our technology, our employees and our philanthropic resources to help victims of domestic violence live peaceful and productive lives."
