National Academy Foundation’s Academy of Engineering

Studies show that American students lag behind their international peers in science and technology proficiency – skills that are critical for a growing number of careers. With support from Verizon Foundation, the National Academy Foundation (NAF) is establishing a new program to recruit and prepare more high school students for careers in engineering and engineering technology. Since its launch 20 years ago, NAF has created a network of career academies to support the development of America’s youth toward personal and professional success in high school, in higher education and throughout their careers. The new Academy of Engineering will focus on bringing high school students into the study of engineering, increasing the participation of women and minorities and preparing high school graduates to enter post secondary engineering programs. NAF’s programs are open to all students, although it targets high schools in urban areas with a high percentage of low-income, minority students. The academies have a high success rate, with 90 percent of participating students graduating from high school and 80 percent going on to college. For more information about NAF, check www.naf.org.
