Spotlight: Cedric Cox - Green Valley Ranch Youth League
When Cedric Cox learned about the Green Valley Ranch Youth League and the benefits it delivered in his Denver community, he knew he wanted to offer his support. The Verizon Business manager joined the sports league's board in 1998 and became president of the board in 2001.
"The league helps kids accomplish goals through team participation and develop their academic skills, as well," Cox said. "Participants learn about sportsmanship, fair play and skill development while they gain confidence and self esteem."
Cox volunteers hundreds of hours every year coaching, refereeing, fundraising and managing the league. The $750 Volunteer Incentive Program (VIP) grant he earned for his volunteer work is providing 10 sports scholarships for kids whose families could not afford to pay their registration fees.
Next year, Cox plans to expand the scholarship opportunities to at-risk kids in the east-metro Denver area. "It's a great way to help underprivileged children learn how to excel."
